In Seattle a man has been charged with fraud and conspiracy. Apparently he conspired with mother about 20 years ago and began faking mental retardation in order to fraudulently obtain social security benefits for his mother - he began the act at the age of 8! Aside from restitution in the amount of about 60k, he could up to 1 year in prison. That is an absolute joke. For a crime like this, where he is intentionally defrauding the government and arguable making it harder for others truly in need to obtain benefits, he should face 10 or even 20 years in prison.

Yeah I wouldn't mind seeing this guy in jail for a lot longer than one year. He probably didn't understand what he was doing, at least not to its full extent, when it started as a young child. But to continue the scam into his adulthood is aggregious. These two clearly don't have any respect for those with actual mental health problems.
